If you have ever dealt with smelly towels you know that simply throwing them in the washing machine won’t do the trick – and they will come out just as smelly as before. This means that you have to be more creative when dealing with mildew smells.
Thankfully, there is one super easy, effective, and cheap trick you can use – not only does it work every time but you need only one ingredient… white distilled vinegar!
How to Get Rid of Mildew Smell From Towels?
Yes, white distilled vinegar is a magical natural ingredient that many uses for cleaning their homes – me included. I also use it to get rid of mildew smells from my towels, and today I am going to teach you how to do it yourself!
It’s super easy – instead of using your fabric softener when washing the towels, use distilled white vinegar. If your washing machine has a fabric softener dispenser then pour the vinegar there but if it is a top-loader – pour half a cup of vinegar on top of the towels. If they are extremely smelly you can use one cup instead of half a cup! And then just wash as usual.
Some people also add a cup of baking soda, however, I don’t think that is necessary plus it will make a huge mess because as we all know baking soda and vinegar react when combined and create fizzing. So I recommend you just stick to vinegar!
If you are worried that your towels will come out smelling like vinegar – they won’t! Trust me, I hate the smell of vinegar and I used to worry about the same thing the first time I tried this trick, however, the vinegar disinfects the towels and gets rid of the mildew smell – it doesn’t replace it!
